Top Ten questions to ask yourself and others during informed consent Ask yourself:

  1. Is this consent form written in plain english and do I understand it?
  2. Am I comfortable about participating in this study after reading the consent form? If not, what do I need to know, ask, or do in order to be comfortable enough to agree to participate?

Ask the investigator:

  1. What are the specific procedures to be used in this study? Can I see an example? What if your equipment doesn't work as anticipated?
  2. What are the benefits to me of participating in this study?
  3. What are the risks to me of participating in this study? How serious are the risks to me in this study? Will you let me know if those risks change during the study?
  4. Will I be compensated for participating in this study? When will I receive the compensation?
  5. What happens to personal data obtained about me in the study - who sees it?
  6. Who will know that I am participating in this study?
  7. How do I end my participation in this study if I change my mind? How do I contact you?

  8. And finally, ask yourself, "Now that I know more about this study, am I still interested?
  • Do I have the time to participate and give it a fair shot?
  • Who stands to gain from my participation in this study?
  • Do I feel safe about participating in this study?"
